While it may look like a great way to entertain visitors, allowing the otters to play with the musical instrument also serves an scientific purpose.
Known as environmental enrichment, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo explains that the process provides stimulation to allow them “to demonstrate their species-typical behaviour, to allow them exercise control or choice over their environment, and to enhance their well-being.”
They probably should take the keyboard off that awful organ setting and change it to synthesizer mode or something. It may be slightly less painful to listen to that way. As it stands the otters need a lot more practice before I hire them to come play my birthday party.
