We’ve all heard the phrase before. Whatever happens happens. My first gut reaction is to say, well, duh. However, we’re gonna get stuck in some deep thought, circular logic, and brain busting fun as we see how this very phrase may spell doom for the universe as we know it. Buckle up your brain, because it’s gonna be rough.
Whatever happens happens, unless it doesn’t. But is that possible? The very root of the saying implies that whatever will happen will most definitely be what happens. This is typically the case and we can say, as a general rule, that really whatever happens happens. Think though what would happen if that happening did not occur.
The saying is deeper than it appears because it infers that when something will happen, then it is unavoidably going to happen. What I mean is that if indeed an event is said to for sure take place in the future, then from that time to its actual occurrence, the future happening and the fact that it will indeed happen at that time are inseparable. Something is holding them together. This force, be it time, common sense, God, or your neighbor’s goat, could make a happening not take place. If indeed an event will take place, what if it never does? What if all happenings just stop? We have no problem allowing for the happening of the event, but our minds melt away when we think in the negative.
This moves from the correct thinking of “if a happening must happen at a certain time, then at that time the happening will happen”, to “if something will happen in the future, then that happening must take place.”
Whatever happens happens? Please, we really have no idea what happens. Especially me, because I barely understand what I typed. Moral of the story is that this little petty phrase has enough power contained within it to potentially destroy the universe and disintegrate our world as we know it faster than everyone on earth dividing by zero at the same time. So please, use it with caution, because you never know when whatever happens won’t actually happen.
