This is Dorothy Howe of Saltdean, East Sussex, England just turned 100. I’m going to bet that’s not a birthday card that Hallmark sells out of a lot. When asked her secret to living to such a ripe old age she answered, ‘I put my health down to whisky [sic] and cigarettes.”
For the past 84 years Dorothy has been smoking 15 cigarettes a day, unless she runs out, then she turns to the whiskey bottle. My research indicates that Dorothy is in the minority here. Most people I’ve ever heard of why maintain a steady flow of whiskey and cigarettes don’t make it to 100 years old. 40 maybe, but 100 is pushing it.
She also had this to say about her health, “I’m still alive and I can lift my elbows – it’s great.” I wish I weren’t the one to break this to you Ms. Howe, you haven’t had eyebrows for 40 years. I’m sorry.
I’m not sure if I’ll make it to 100. I don’t plan to take up smoking and drinking any time soon, it’s just to expensive of a hobby for me. Perhaps it will turn out that the key to longevity is pickles and mayonnaise on your grilled cheese. If that’s the case, then I’m set.
